What is a doula?

The Greek word doula (pronounced doo-la)  means woman caregiver.  This word is now used to describe  a trained and experienced labor companion who provides the woman and her husband/ partner with continuous emotional and physical support before, during and just after childbirth.  A doula also works as an advocate to help the laboring woman make her wishes known to hospital staff.

Why should I hire a doula?

Studies have shown women who hire doulas are....

  • 26% less likely to give birth by cesarean section
  • 41% less likely to give birth with vacuum extraction or forceps
  •  28% less likely to use any analgesia or anesthesia and
  • 33% less likely to be dissatisfied with or negatively rate their birth experiences

Studies also show doula care is linked with a decrease in postpartum depression and improved success in breastfeeding.
